Video: Millions of Bees Let Loose After Truck Crashes in Kansas City

Drivers along the Missouri highway told to take caution of this “traffic sting”

September 6, 2016

You might want to roll up your windows if you’re driving through Kansas City. The Missouri Department of Transportation reported on Friday that a semi-trailer truck carrying live bees overturned on Interstate 435. Luckily, no one was seriously injured by the crash nor the loose bees.

Initially, the truck was said to be transporting about 40,000 honeybees, but an expert later told the Kansas City Star that there were more likely between 8 to 11 million insects onboard. A total of 408 hives were on the truck at the time of the accident – typically a single hive houses around 40,000 bees. Local bee companies were called to the scene to try and gather the cargo. Authorities said at least some of the bees could not be recovered and had flown away.

MoDOT Kansas City took to twitter to warn motorists, using the hashtag #beesafe to get the word out about the accident.
