VIDEO: Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie Battle for Control in ‘Mary Queen of Scots’ Trailer
Josie Rourke-directed historical drama debuts Dec. 7
July 12, 20182018 Oscar nominees Saoirse Ronan (“Lady Bird”) and Margot Robbie (“I, Tonya”) star as friends who become rivals and eventually battle for control in “Mary Queen of Scots,” a historical drama hitting theaters in December.
Saoirse stars as the charismatic Mary Stuart, the Queen of France. After being widowed at the age of 18, she defies pressure to remarry and instead returns to her native Scotland to reclaim what she believes is her rightful throne. Margot, meanwhile, looks nothing like her infamous Harley Quinn character as she portrays England and Ireland’s ruler Elizabeth I.
They begin the newly released official trailer (above) as friends as they vie for power and independence in a world so often dominated by their male counterparts. But when Mary asserts her claim to the throne and threatens Elizabeth’s sovereignty, history-shaping acts of betrayal and rebellion are soon on the horizon.
Directed by Josie Rourke, “Mary Queen of Scots” co-stars Gemma Chan, Guy Pearce, and David Tennant. The film opens Dec. 7 in theaters. Watch the trailer (above).
