VIDEO: Zachary Levi Shoots Lightning, Buys Beer, and Goofs on Superman and Batman in New ‘Shazam!’ Trailer

DC Comics-inspired superhero film arrives April 5 in theaters

March 4, 2019

A wizard bestows a 14-year-old boy with the power to shoot lightning, fly, and, well, buy beer in the new trailer for “Shazam!,” arriving in April.

The DC Comics-inspired film stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, a young man capable of transforming into a superpowered adult named Shazam (“Chuck’s” Zachary Levi). The latest clip begins with him and his foster brother Freddy (“It’s” Jack Dylan Grazer) testing the limits of Shazam’s powers, which include zapping things with lightning, catching buses, and convincing convenience store clerks he’s old enough to purchase alcohol.

It’s all fun and games for the unlikely hero until Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (”Kingsman’s” Mark Strong), a villainous inventor with superpowers of his own, enters the fray and starts tossing Shazam around like a sack of mushy potatoes.

It’s unclear whether “Shazam!” is part of the DC Extended Universe, but the trailer doesn’t imply any overt connection to “Justice League” or its offshoot films. The clip does, however, reference both the Caped Crusader and the Man of Steel in separate gags. First, Shazam chucks a talking Batman toy at the villain, though it doesn’t do much good. Later, Shazam brother implores him to take a page from Superman’s playbook and “leap tall buildings in a single bound,” but his attempt doesn’t quite go as planned.

Directed by David F. Sandberg (“Lights Out”) and executive produced by Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson, among others, “Shazam!” co-stars Grace Fulton (“Annabelle: Creation”), Faithe Herman (“This Is Us”), and Cooper Andrews (“The Walking Dead”) as well as Djimon Hounsou (“Captain Marvel”) as the wizard responsible for giving young Billy his powers.

“Shazam!” opens April 5 in theaters.
