Gargantuan titans run rampant over the Earth in the final trailer for “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” and the film’s titular reptilian beast might be the only thing standing between mankind and extinction.

The latest promo begins with nightmarish creatures like Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah laying waste to civilization to the tune of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” The montage of destruction is punctuated by the wide-eyed faces of the film’s stars—including “Stranger Thing’s” Millie Bobby Brown, “Silicon Valley’s” Thomas Middleditch, “The Shape of Water’s” Sally Hawkins, and “Super 8’s” Kyle Chandler—who can do little more than watch while oversized moths and three-headed monsters bring the world to its knees.

The humans eventually realize their only champion with a shot at saving them is one of the monsters themselves. “Our planet will perish and so will we unless we set Godzilla free,” a scientist played by Vera Farmiga explains.

Directed by Mike Dougherty (“Krampus”), the explosive “Godzilla” and “Kong: Skull Island” sequel co-stars Bradley Whitford, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Zhang Ziyi, Charles Dance, and Ken Watanabe.

“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” smashes its way into theaters on May 31.
