A trio of rock legends open up about their origins, setbacks, and impressively long beards ahead of their 50th anniversary tour in the trailer for “That Little Ol' Band From Texas,” a documentary about music icons and past Stern Show guests ZZ Top.
The minute-long clip (above) teases candid interviews with band members Dusty Hill, Frank Beard, and Billy Gibbons as they discuss ZZ Top’s formation and meteoric rise to success as well some of the speed bumps they hit along the way, including costly run-ins with drugs.
Directed by Sam Dunn (“Metal: A Headbanger's Journey”), the doc incorporates animated storytelling, historical footage of the band rocking out for the likes of Johnny Carson and his “Tonight Show” audience, celebrity fan interviews with Queens of the Stone Age singer Josh Homme and actor Billy Bob Thornton, and more.
“When you see them on stage it was like seeing Bugs Bunny in person,” Thornton explains with a laugh.
As Stern Show fans will remember, ZZ Top visited the Stern Show in 2013 with the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers sitting down for an interview with Howard and performing several classic tunes for listeners. Relive the band's live, in-studio performance of “La Grange” (below).
“ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band From Texas” premieres Aug. 16 at Hollywood’s Cinerama Dome and nationwide screenings timed to the trio’s “50th Anniversary Tour” are scheduled to follow.
