Liam Gallagher Takes a Sad, Wine-Guzzling King for a Ride in ‘Once’ Music Video

Stripped-down demo hails from the Oasis legend’s newly released “Acoustic Sessions” EP

January 31, 2020

Rock legend, longtime Oasis frontman, and Stern Show veteran Liam Gallagher surprised fans on Friday, dropping his new “Acoustic Sessions” EP as well as the music video for one of its tracks, “Once.” The song lands just a day after his brother Noel Gallagher dropped a tune of his own.

The clip (above) follows French actor and former soccer star Eric Cantona, who plays a lost and lonely king wandering around an empty mansion while sipping wine and playing sad songs on the piano. The video ends with him putting on his crown and royal garb, walking into the yard of his gigantic estate, and getting into a Rolls Royce being driven by a chauffeur played by Liam himself. The video is directed by Charlie Lightening, the man behind Gallagher’s recent “As It Was” documentary.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to have Eric Cantona, the last Rock n roll footballer, star in my video for ‘Once’. Songs like this don’t come around very often and neither do football players like him,” Liam wrote in a tweet.

Liam first released “Once” on last year’s solo album “Why Me? Why Not,” and this low-fi demo version accompanying the music video is one of eight tracks on “Acoustic Sessions.” The record also features acoustic versions of several Oasis songs, including “Sad Song,” “Stand By Me,” and “Cast No Shadow.”

When Liam visited the show in 2017 to promote his debut solo album “Wall of Glass,” he also opened up to Howard about his contentious relationship with his brother and former bandmate Noel. Ultimately, the rocker revealed he’d be more than willing to partake in an Oasis reunion. “Without a doubt. That’s my band, you know what I mean? But we gotta become brothers first,” the younger Gallagher told Howard, adding “People want it, and … I love Oasis, it’s the best thing ever.” Watch a clip from the interview (below).

Liam Gallagher’s “Acoustic Sessions” EP is out now.
