Oscar-winning Stern Show guest’s thriller hits theaters July 1

“Nice Guys” star Russell Crowe turns vicious in the official trailer for the upcoming psychological thriller “Unhinged.”

The Oscar-winning Stern Show veteran plays a rage-filled motorist who doesn’t take kindly to getting honked at by a single mom (Caren Pistorius) running late for work. After she repeatedly fails to apologize to him, Crowe’s character takes it upon himself to run people over, break down her door with a hammer, and pummel her friend in a diner—all to the sounds of a cover of Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box.”

“What do you want?” the tormented mom asks Russell’s character at one point (above).

“I need you to learn what a bad day really is and I need you to learn to say you’re sorry through violence and retribution,” he responds.

While Crowe is celebrated for heroic turns in films like “Gladiator,” “Cinderella Man,” and “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” to name a few, he has been known to play a villain on occasion. The actor even scored a Golden Globe last year for his portrayal of embattled Fox News executive Roger Ailes on Showtime’s “The Loudest Voice.” Russell talked about playing Ailes at length during his Stern Show debut last June, explaining what it took to get into character and why he chose the role in the first place. “He’s a complicated guy but that’s what makes it interesting to do,” Russell told Howard. “Unhinged” is scheduled to hit theaters on July 1.
