Beth O. and Leslie Duquette from the North Shore Animal League stopped in to report on their rescue efforts in the New Orleans area. Beth said the group members are trying to gather all the animals affected by the hurricane and find people to adopt them. She added that the campaign is going great, and that Sal, Gary, Scott the Engineer and HowardStern.com Webmaster, Doug Hurwitt, have all adopted dogs. Doug called in and told Howard he knew they would adopt Abbie, as soon as he saw the picture of her Howard sent him to put on the site. Beth reported that Abbie had been found swimming in her cage for hours and had gone days without eating before being rescued. Howard said he had heard that Doug had an invisible fence that uses a small static shock to keep their dog from leaving the property. Doug said that this was true but promised not to use it for Abbie.
Howard commented that was a nice gesture seeing that the dog had been through so much already. Beth also mentioned that Animal Planet is going to film Abbie's adoption for a segment about the animal rescue that will air on the channel at a later date. Leslie said that 2,300 animals have been saved so far and will be either reunited with their families or placed up for adoption. Beth noted the response the group has gotten for its efforts has been tremendous.
