Howard announced that Dan Rather called him yesterday to thank him for the comments he made about him Monday night on "Letterman." Howard reported that he told Dan how honored he was that he called and admitted that he didn't think he said enough in his honor when he had the chance. Howard told Dan that he was "the heart and soul" of CBS who devoted his life to the company before he was "dismissed like garbage without a thank you." Howard also pointed out that he thinks David Letterman should've been more supportive of Dan, especially because Dan was the first guest on "Late Show" after September 11. Howard noted that CBS was pressured to fire Dan for of his liberal leanings and that none of its execs stood up for him. Howard added that Dan had a number of things to say to him, but that all he'd reveal on the air was that Dan noted he hoped their "paths would cross."
