Gary introduced a segment from the WNBC days called “Whatever Happened To…” Gary said that his job for the bit was to get in touch with former television stars and book them as guests. However, Gary added that, while the guests thought they were going to appear on a “regular” radio program, they were instead interviewed by “Out of the Closet Stern” and “Mr. Blackswell,” flamboyantly gay characters played by Howard and Fred, respectively. Gary also pointed out that since Howard wasn’t syndicated at that time, few people outside of New York City knew about him. In the clip, “Out of the Closet Stern” and “Mr. Blackswell” talked to Gary Sandy of “WKRP in Cincinnati” fame. Although Gary Sandy handled much of his discussion with the duo well, he admitted, in an angered tone, that he didn’t want to get into details about his relationship with Lonnie Anderson. After the tape, Gary noted that he once booked a guest from “Hazel,” who, after the interview, called him back and warned him that he was going to advise other celebrities not to appear on Howard’s show. Gary added that the actor must’ve carried out his promise, because, when he later tried to book the actor who played Spanky on “The Little Rascals,” the actor yelled at him as soon as he found out who he was. However, Gary said that it was through “Whatever Happened To…” that they met Grandpa Al Lewis.
