Jon Hein started today’s Friday Show launching right into a clip of Howard broadcasting at WRNW in Westchester County from 1978. Before the tape, Gary explained that, in the clip, Howard was at the premiere of the movie, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” and was calling in his report to a disc jockey named Donna Donna. Gary added that Howard not only had to pretend that “Sgt. Pepper’s” was a good film, but that he also had to act like there were a ton of people in the crowd when there were actually only about 20 in attendance. In the clip, Howard requested that the movie-goers sing the chorus of “Sgt. Pepper’s,” which they refused to do, before giving away a Robert Palmer album to a woman in the crowd even though “it had absolutely nothing to do with the movie.” Gary said the segment lasted 13 minutes, but the brief portion Jon played this morning included the only “highlights.” Ralph responded that he’s “a big fan of cutting down clips,” but that he could’ve kept listening to this one. Gary added that Howard sounded like he was on valium during the broadcast as there were only trace signs of the real Howard in his voice.
