Gary brought up the comedian, David Brenner, had a talk show, “Nightlife,” in the 1980s on which Howard appeared because of the friendship they had developed at the time. Before Jon got to the clip, Gary also pointed out Billy Preston was the bandleader on “Nightlife,” and his recent passing was one of the reasons he wanted to play the clip. In the tape, Howard mentioned to Billy it must’ve been tough to get work once he was “dumped by the Beatles” before going on to criticize Phil Donahue and Oprah Winfrey. Howard proceeded to ask David’s girlfriend, Victoria, to come onto the stage so he could apologize for a comment he made to her before the show. Although Howard never revealed what he said to Victoria, he presented her with a number of gifts, including an Elvis clock and underwear. Howard then encouraged Billy to get members of the Beatles on “Nightlife” to help its ratings, but added he doubted Billy still had their numbers. During the second segment of the interview, David brought out Howard’s mom, Ray, to find out about him. Ray reported Howard was a “sweet kid” growing up, and Howard acknowledged that was true, despite the reputation he had earned through his show. Howard went on to claim he had sex with women in his mother’s bed when he was growing up, but Ray laughed off the claim referring to him as “a wuss.” After the clip, Gary noted Howard asked him to announce to the crowd that he had been in a bus accident prior to the show, but acknowledged he “screwed it up” because he was so nervous about being on television. However, Gary also admitted he wouldn’t have understood the joke even if he had gotten it right.
