Jon played an early version of “The Sound of Kinison” that had been rejected when it was introduced to Howard at KROCK. Following the song, Gary said Howard thought the sentiment of the original song was good, but he wanted more of Sam’s comedy routines in it, which was why he rejected it. Gary added Fred then went through all the standup acts of Sam’s he could find, and inserted more of them into the song, which Jon then played. Jon next played a segment from “The Channel 9 Show,” this one of Sam and another guest, Joe Walsh. In the clip, Joe announced the Eagles were reuniting at the time, and, even though he said it’d make his band mate, Don Henley, mad, went on to sing “Desperado,” with Sam on electric guitar. Gary explained he read in a magazine before Joe played “Desperado” that Don was upset Joe had been playing the song in concert because he wrote it and didn’t think Joe could relate to the lyrics enough to sing it properly. Gary recalled that Don was so angry at Joe for singing “Desperado” on the program that he kicked him out of the Eagles. Given this, Gary thought some people blamed Howard for holding up the Eagles reunion for five years because of the strife his show created between Joe and Don. Jon then went on to play an acoustic version of “Desperado” Joe did on the show after he and Don had ended their feud.
