Howard started today describing "the controversy" that developed after he decided to end the show at 10:10 because of the gas leak that enveloped New York City yesterday morning.
Howard then played a clip from OutQ, the gay channel on SIRIUS, of the show's hosts on the air at the time yesterday jokingly criticized him for ending his show because of the leak. Then Howard discussed Ralph's reaction to the leak, explaining how Ralph called into "The Wrap Up Show" to question why the show ended merely because of someone smelled some gas, but then called him to say he wouldn't be able to make a scheduled meeting he had with Howard later in the day because he was worried about the leak.
In fact, Howard added that Ralph left him a number of messages concerning the leak. Howard then played a new prank call – this one of Sal and Richard calling into a public access show about chess – while he checked his phone to see if he still had Ralph's messages.
Once Howard got back, he announced he had one of Ralph's messages, and played it. In the call, Ralph commented he was "a little weirded out" about the gas leak, and therefore didn't want to leave his apartment.
Howard responded to the clip by saying there were times he felt like he was Ralph's father, while Artie noted that, to him, it sounded like all Ralph wanted to do yesterday was get out of work. Artie added he picked up on Ralph's point of view, explaining he left the studio as soon as he heard about the leak but only because he saw it as an opportunity to go home early.
