Howard noted that Artie's lips were chalky, and Artie confessed that he just popped a Subutex; "This morning I woke up and had the shakes a little bit. I got to fly later today and I hate flying. I'm getting OCD, man. My father had it. Everyday I lay out my shit for the next day. I have my cell phone, my credit cards, my ID to get in here, and I can't go to sleep until they're all straight. I can't get it out of my mind that they're crooked." Artie also said he couldn't close his eyes to go to sleep if the time on the clock ends with ":13."
Howard wondered what Artie believed the consequence would be if he did go to sleep at that minute, so Artie admitted that he feared for his mother's health and safety. Artie explained that he also obsesses over other things; he'll watch a movie several times a day and have to turn it off at the same point, and he constantly checks to make sure his front door's chain lock is in place. Howard told Artie that he had to give up the rituals cold turkey: it's childish and self-obsessed to think you can control the world with pathetic little rituals.
