Tom said his descent really began 12 years ago, when his wife walked: “That’s when the slide really happened–when she left me.”

In addition to heroin, Tom also struggled with an addiction to crystal meth: “It just makes you want to [have sex] all the time.”

Tom told Howard about his friendship with Charlie Sheen: “I used to be friendly with Charlie Sheen. Very friendly. He tried to get me into rehab.” Tom explained that Charlie, fresh from rehab himself, once slept in Tom’s backyard for a day and a half, sending in a note every few hours: “I kept sending the same note back to him: Get a hobby, you loser.”
