After Carol left, Howard asked Gary why he'd allowed her in the studio when she clearly exhibited signs of a contagious disease: "You're here to do the things I can't! … [And] you said, 'She doesn't sound that bad.' Based on that, I made the call." If Gary had advised him better, Howard would've been appreciative: "I would've pulled your pants off and [given you oral]! Because I'd say, 'There's a guy who thinks of me, who cares about my health.'"
Instead, Howard has to rush to the doctor: "Next week, there's a guy coming in with Black Plague. We'll see if I survive that." Gary eventually broke down ("You're an unbelievably cruel person."), and, when Howard apologized, scoffed: "This is your move. You yell and then you feel bad." To honor Gary's decision, Howard renamed the show: "The Gary Dell'Abate Show." Raye, Howard's mother, later called in to say he'd been immunized against whooping cough as a child: "You make a tragedy out of everything." Howard laughed: "Where do you think I got that from?"
