Early in the show, Howard noted the late Dick Clark's odd career arc, starting with his ownership of every "American Bandstand" performance: "The rap among some musicians was that Dick Clark made his empire off of their hide."
Still, Howard said he had respect for Dick: "He was an excellent game show host and he made people feel good. … He understood what people liked and I will miss him."
But continuing his New Year's Eve countdown post-stroke was sad: "It was unbelievable narcissism. It was like, enough."
