Early in the show, Howard looked back at his Letterman appearance last Thursday, fuming that producers said he was booked for two segments--and one more, if things went well: "In other words, 'Maybe you'll get a third.' I wish they wouldn't say that to me. I really don't feel like I have to [prove myself]. What is this? A test of whether or not I'm good? They have me booked as a guest. Is this a contest to get Dave's approval?" Howard's own policy is far more courteous ("On our show, I never say that."), allowing the conversation to flow naturally. When a good interview is over, it's not resurrected unnecessarily: "It's like riding a bull."
