Avril Lavigne stopped by this morning with her new husband, Nickelback front man Chad Kroeger, whom she married just ninety days ago to perform her new single 'Let Me Go' off her upcoming, self titled new album "Avril Lavigne".
Avril and Chad met when it was suggested that they work together. Avril knew right away that she was into him. They were married about a year after they met – at a top secret castle wedding where the guests had to sign non-disclosure agreements.
Howard is always fascinated by how a couple splits their bills, and Avril and Chad, like most famous couples, split it all right down the middle.
Avril talked about being discovered by super producer L.A. Reid when she was just fifteen - he signed her on the spot, giving her an advance somewhere upwards of one million dollars.
L.A. discovered Avril - who had been singing country covers at local fairs - after she won a contest and sang on stage with Shania Twain. She promptly dropped out of school and moved to New York, where she lived with her sixteen-year-old brother.
Her first album blew up and she's steadily released hit songs since. Howard asked her about her biggest songs and she and her husband played them for us.
Complicated – Avril's first hit, was written in about a day with production team The Matrix. Avril said that every hit she's had has been a song that was effortless for her to write.
Sk8er Boi – Avril got into skateboarding and hanging out with the guys in high school and wrote this song about a skater who is rejected by the popular girl and then goes on to become a rockstar. She wrote the chorus without any verses and knew it would be a hit.
I'm With You – This one took a few passes at recording to get it just right. They had to turn the lights down low and Avril had to get in the mood. Avril cited this as her favorite song to sing, because it's slow unlike her other faster songs.
Breakaway – While Kelly Clarkson made this song a hit, Avril wrote it. She said she "wasn't feeling it" so when Kelly's management asked for it, she gave it to them. She tried to play it anyway – at least as much as she could remember – and Howard suggests she add it to her set list, like Prince does with the song he wrote but Sinead O'Conner made a hit: I Would Die 4 U.
Let Me Go – Avril's new single, recorded with her husband. It was originally a song they wrote about break-ups, but once they fell in love, they added a verse at the end where they get together and it becomes "Don't Let Me Go."
