Kurt Sutter, creator of one of Howard's favorite current shows, Sons of Anarchy, stopped by to teach Howard and all of us how to create a hit TV show.
Howard was facinated by how a guy from New Jersey could go on to create and produce a show about a hardcore bike gang in California.
HOW TO CREATE A TV SHOW ACCORDING TO KURT SUTTER
Kurt grew up in New Jersey, watching Hill Street Blues and a ton of cartoons, and fighting with his parents.
Like many creative people before him, he split from his family for a while, getting into drugs and wild living in New York City. When the fast life ran its course, he decided to go back to school, taking an interest in theater.
Kurt moved out to LA, where, as he put it "Everyone has a screenplay in their back seat," but he really committed himself to writing.
"You need to write for four hours per day if you're a writer." Kurt explained. He wrote a spec script for the TV show "The Shield," and landed a gig as a writer on the show, eventually working his way up to Executive Producer.
From there, he created the hit FX series Sons of Anarchy, which wasn't without its share of drama.
Howard 101 host Chuck Zito claimed that the show was rip off of an idea he had. Kurt took a path that very few dare to take with Mr. Zito – he called him out and referred to him as a "delusional bitch." The two met for lunch and Mr. Zito showed up wearing a Sons of Anarchy jacket and Kurt knew the lunch could go one of two ways – obviously Kurt is still alive, so it turned out well, and he even cast Chuck in a role on the show.
SONS OF ANARCHY - TODAY AND IN THE FUTURE
As for the show today, it's in its sixth season with the plan being the seventh season will be it's last. Kurt did say though that he's always wanted to do a prequel to Sons of Anarchy that would follow the origin story how the gang came to be (The story of the 'Original 9' for SOA fans).
50 SHADES OF ANARCHY
He asked Kurt's advice on the role, asking him to judge it by the strength of the material, nothing else. When the world seemed to turn on Charlie, he gave the role up just before filming the season finale of Sons of Anarchy. During the shoot, Kurt just looked at Charlie and said "We'll talk later."
MEETING MRS. SUTTER (AND GEMMA MORROW, PEGGY BUNDY, TURANGA LEELA...)
Power couple Kurt Sutter and Katey Sagal
Katey Sagal, aka Gemma Morrow on Sons of Anarchy, has been on the show before, but never with her husband. Howard got her to come in at the end of Kurt's interview and they all talked about Kurt writing all of Katey's sex scenes in Sons of Anarchy, a practice which fascinated Howard.
Katey takes it on with sense of humor, just looking at Kurt and saying: "Doggy-style? Really?"
Just after landing his job at The Shield Kurt finally got the courage to ask his now-wife Katey Sagal out on a date – he was nervous to approach her when he was a 'loserish' struggling writer. Katey showed up with a chaperone, but quickly told her friend to beat it and got to know Kurt alone – though it took them a month to finally have sex.
And when they did finally do the deed, Kurt was sure to take anything in Katey's room that resembled a doll and turn it's face away from him, because he's very, very afraid of dolls. Katey described forcing him onto the It's A Small World ride at Disneyland and thinking he was going to jump out of the boat, he was so freaked out.
They were both fresh off divorces and the timing was right, so here they are, both sober and happily married. They seem to have a pretty decent sex life too, as Katey alluded to when Howard asked if she ever blows Kurt when he's at his desk writing – she didn't confirm it, but didn't deny it either.
