Before he left, David remembered auditioning for Lorne Michaels with a Michael J. Fox impression: “I get on ‘SNL’ and they want me to write for everyone and that’s always hard, and I don’t want to do that. I don’t know how. I don’t know how to write a sketch. And no one’s there coaching you. They already had a Dana, which is a better version of me.”
It really burned him when Michael J. Fox finally signed on to host the show and Lorne came straight to David, asking, “Can you teach Dana how to do the impression?”
