Today Show host Matt Lauer stopped by to talk to his old friend Howard about interviewing, his love for Katie Couric, and the size of his penis.
Matt joked early on that the best interview he's ever had the privilege of conducting had to be with Stern Show producer Gary "Baba Booey" Dell'Abate, whose book Matt of course did not read. Time constraints on Lauer mean he can't read the books of every author he interviews, and a book about a radio producer's favorite albums and his relationship with his mother doesn't strike anybody as some kind of priority,
Matt goes on to say that the New York Times has been a little lazy lately, and there is "some erosion there." But he also concedes how someone's opinion of a publication can easily be colored by how that publication treats them personally.
Matt then revealed that, after his famous interview with Tom Cruise, the actor's people called The Today Show and made it known that they'd prefer Tom's all-out attack on Brooke Shields and anti-depressants to not make the final cut of the interview. Obviously, the comments stayed in.
Next, Matt recounted how he got the first interview with then First Lady Hillary Clinton after the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke (the one where Hillary denied that her husband had an affair, calling the whole scandal a "vast right-wing conspiracy"), before claiming he doesn't get nervous for huge interviews like that; he reserves his nerves for the people he knows (like Howard).
When asked about his favorite cohosts, Matt said that although he loves Meredith Vieira, Katie Couric is the one of his heart, because she was the first. He then rated Katie a "9 or 10" physically, but a 14 when it comes to her personality.
Finally, Howard informed Matt that the penises of all the guests we've had this week have been over 9 inches in length.
Matt's Response? "The trend is continuing here."
