In a rare occurrence, Stern Show staffer Jon Hein called out of work sick on Tuesday, leaving his Wrap Up Show co-host chair alongside Gary Dell’Abate vacant.
The question of who would fill in for Jon was immediately raised with everyone from Shuli Egar to Brent Hatley throwing their hat into the ring.
As Brent is the official Wrap Up Show producer and had reportedly been lobbying in the office for the spot, Howard turned to him first.
“Well, I’m a better radio host; Shuli’s a better comedian,” he said.
Considering that point, Jason Kaplan weighed in with his choice. “Gary’s already a great radio host, so … maybe it should be Shuli.”
Ronnie “the Limo Driver” Mund and Fred Norris also received a few votes from callers, but it was Benjy Bronk who came in with a hard sell.
“I would be great with opening up Gary about the show,” he contended.
The rest of the staff was not convinced, though, and Gary himself had hesitations. “He’s audio quicksand,” the Stern Show executive producer said.
Ultimately, after tallying up votes from both staffers and callers alike, Howard announced that Benjy had received the most and would be co-hosting with Gary, but with a few caveats — Gary was granted permission to throw him out if Benjy got out of control and Shuli would also be in studio to balance the discussion.
“Don’t talk yourself off it,” Fred warned.
Benjy wasn’t too pleased with the restrictions, arguing that Gary might throw him out during a legitimate argument.
“I’m making Gary the judge and Gary will be lenient. Gary, don’t just throw him right out,” Howard instructed.
With that settled, one more question remained. Despite calling out sick from his Stern Show duties, would Jon Hein be hosting his daily sports show on SNY in the evening?
“I’d say 95 percent chance he does,” Jason predicted.
