Oscar-nominated Stern Show veteran Bradley Cooper plays a carnival con man who claims to read minds and channel the dead in the trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley,” arriving in December.

Adapted from William Lindsay Gresham’s 1946 novel of the same name, the psychological thriller follows Stan (Cooper), a charismatic grifter who works in a traveling carnival alongside a clairvoyant (Toni Collette) and her mentalist husband (David Strathairn). Stan gets in over his head after teaming up with a dangerous psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett) to fleece a tycoon.

“If you displease the right people, the world closes in on you very, very fast,” Blanchett’s character tells him (above).

Written by del Toro and Kim Morgan, “Nightmare Alley” co-stars Richard Jenkins, Rooney Mara, Willem Dafoe, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, and Mary Steenburgen.

“Nightmare Alley” opens Dec. 17 in theaters.
