‘Narcos’ Renewed for Two More Seasons: Meet Your New Drug Kingpin

On Tuesday morning, Netflix announced they’re lining up two more seasons of their critically-acclaimed series “Narcos.” But any fan who has already finished Season 2 is now left wondering who will be the show’s new star. Spoiler alert: Season 2 of “Narcos” stuck to the real-life story of Pablo Escobar, which means the series is going to need a new drug kingpin.
RIP, Don Pablo.
As the second season came to a close, all signs pointed to history repeating itself on the scripted series, which means the Cali Cartel will soon seize all of Escobar’s business, led by Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela, Escobar’s former partner in crime, portrayed by Damián Alcázar.
But he’s not alone at the top.
Also trying to stake his claim is Hélmer “Pacho” Herrera (played by Alberto Ammann), a high-ranking member of the Cali clan who has appeared in several episodes on the series already. In reality, Herrera made moves to bring in major business by selling to the biggest names in New York finance. Before long, the Cali Cartel grew to become a drug-trafficking, money-laundering powerhouse, reportedly supplying 90 percent of the world’s cocaine at one time. Even Pablo Escobar couldn’t do that.
The writers of “Narcos” have already hinted at how differently the rivals of Escobar did business: not with one leader but with several, all working within a close-knit network of independent cells that exchanged money, information, and protection to one another. The Season 2 finale ends with the DEA baffled to see drug sales increase following Escobar’s death.
How will the story continue? Fans can watch the rise of a new drug syndicate when Season 3 premieres in 2017.
