Beatles Release ‘Sgt. Pepper’ Outtake Ahead of 50th Anniversary Reissue

Hear the title track to the band's legendary album like you never have before

April 28, 2017

Ahead of the much-anticipated release of the Beatles 50th anniversary “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” box set, Capitol Records is sharing an unheard outtake of the album’s title track (above).

One of 34 outtakes that will be available on the box set, “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (take 9 + speech)” features a raw, more rocking vibe that gets somewhat buried under the lavish production of the finished album version. The released clip is the same basic take used on the “Sgt. Pepper” album, but in a whole new, stripped-down light. As a result, listeners can hear what the Beatles, as a four-piece band, were playing before the horns, sound effects, overdubbed guitars, and audience voices were added. The take also continues on longer than the album version, with the band jamming under Paul McCartney’s vocal ad libs. As the take ends, listeners get a fascinating glimpse into the Beatles’ working approach, as they all begin exchanging notes and ideas on their performance.

“Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” 50th anniversary album is due out May 26. Read more about the special box set here.
