VIDEO: Steven Spielberg’s Official ‘Ready Player One’ Trailer Has Pop Culture References Aplenty

Upcoming sci-fi film pays homage to “Back to the Future,” “King Kong,” and Chuckie from “Child’s Play”

Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of “Ready Player One,” a science-fiction adventure story following a young man struggling to stay alive in a world gone to hell while also competing for a top prize in a reality-bending online treasure hunt.

The Oscar-winning director’s rendition of OASIS, the film’s massive digital environment, is both visually stunning and filled with pop-culture references. Since imagination is the online world’s only constraint, users might find them flying around in “Back to the Future’s” iconic DeLorean or fighting the killer Chuckie doll from “Child’s Play.”

Other nostalgia-inducing cameos found in the trailer (above)—set in large part to Van Halen’s “Jump”—include King Kong, Batman villains the Joker and Harley Quinn, the “Thundercats” cartoon, “Tomb Raider’s” scantily clad heroine Lara Croft, and many, many more.

“Ready Player One” stars Tye Sheridan (“X-Men: Apocalypse,” “Mud”), Olivia Cooke (“Bates Motel”), Ben Mendelsohn (“Rogue One – A Star Wars Story”), T.J. Miller (“Deadpool”), Simon Pegg (the “Star Trek” movies), and Oscar winner Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies” and “Dunkirk”). The film hits theaters March 30.
