VIDEO: Natalie Portman Encounters Aliens, Environmental Disaster in ‘Annihilation’ Trailer

The sci-fi flick, written and directed by “Ex Machina’s” Alex Garland, hits theaters in 2018

Natalie Portman encounters dangerous aliens and lives to tell the tale in the first teaser for “Annihilation,” an upcoming science-fiction film about a team of scientists leading an expedition into Area X, a quarantined environmental disaster zone.

The Oscar-winning “Black Swan” beauty plays Lena, a biologist who joins the mission in the hopes of rescuing her husband (Oscar Isaac). As the trailer (above) shows, however, she finds much more than she bargained for, including albino animals and humans who have quite possibly been transformed into plants.

Writer-director Alex Garland—the filmmaker behind Alicia Vikander and Isaac’s 2015’s breakout hit “Ex Machina”—adapted “Annihilation” from the “Southern Reach” trilogy, Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling sci-fi book series. The film’s co-stars include Jennifer Jason Leigh (“The Hateful Eight”), Gina Rodriguez (“Deepwater Horizon”), Tessa Thompson (“Thor: Ragnarok”), and Tuva Novotny.

“Annihilation” hits theaters Feb. 23, 2018. Watch the teaser (above).
