VIDEO: Joaquin Phoenix Plays a Quadriplegic Cartoonist With a Drinking Problem in Upcoming Biopic
“Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot” also stars Rooney Mara, Jack Black, and Stern Show celebrity superfan Jonah Hill

After a nearly three-year theatrical hiatus, Joaquin Phoenix finally returns to the big screen in the darkly comedic biopic “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot.”
On Tuesday, Amazon Studios dropped the first trailer for the upcoming film, which sees Phoenix playing real-life quadriplegic cartoonist John Callahan, who died in 2010. The short clip (above) begins in a rehabilitation facility, as a long-haired, charismatic sponsor played by Stern Show celebrity superfan Jonah Hill invites Phoenix’s character to open up to the group about his drinking problem.
“I started drinking when I was 13,” Joaquin tells them. “I liked it a lot. And I never stopped.”
In addition to focusing on his struggles with alcohol, the trailer offers glimpses of the horrific accident that left Mr. Callahan paralyzed as well as the morbidly hilarious cartoons which made him so successful.
Gus Van Sant directed and wrote the film, adapting it from Callahan’s autobiography of the same name. The movie co-stars Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon, and past Stern Show guest Jack Black, as well as Rooney Mara—making this the third collaboration for Phoenix and Mara, who also starred together in “Her” and the upcoming biblical epic “Mary Magdalene.”
