Previously unreleased “Keep a Little Soul” hails from 1982

A new Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers music video for a previously unreleased song was unveiled ahead of a massive box set, scheduled to arrive nearly a year to the date after the tragic death of the band’s legendary frontman.

Called “An American Treasure,” the four-CD, 60-song box set marks the first posthumous release for the band since Petty passed away last October at the age of 66. The compilation, curated in part by Petty’s daughter Adria and his wife Dana, will reportedly contain heaps of previously unreleased material, including studio recordings, live recordings, and alternate versions of already-famous Petty tunes.

Among those previously unreleased tracks are 1982’s “Keep a Little Soul,” which SiriusXM debuted Tuesday on-air. On Wednesday, Petty’s camp released a music video for the song set to vintage footage of Petty in the recording studio, on stage, and even playing in his yard as a child. Check it out (above).

As Stern Show fans may remember, Howard and Fred Norris paid tribute to Petty on-air last year after learning of the rock icon’s death. In addition to playing some of their favorite songs of his, Howard recalled once watching Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers perform an intimate set at a birthday party. “It was the coolest thing,” Howard said.

Pop star Miley Cyrus also joined the Stern Show the week of Petty’s death and shared her heartfelt thoughts on the musician’s passing. “It’s just really hard for me, watching those people that I grew up with leaving,” Miley told Howard during her in-studio interview. She paid further homage to Petty by performing a cover of his 1994 song “Wildflowers” live, on the air. “The reason why I chose this song is because, again, it’s hopeful. It’s hopeful rather than mourning,” Miley told Howard.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ “An American Treasure” is available Sept. 28. Get more information here.
