VIDEO: John Oliver Warns of Powerball-Winning Terrorists and Anti-Semitic Chipmunks in ‘Last Week Tonight’ Season 5 Trailer

Past Stern Show guest’s Emmy-winning series returns to HBO on Feb. 18

January 22, 2018

John Oliver vows to push aside distractions in the Season 5 teaser for HBO’s “Last Week Tonight,” but that might be easier said than done.

The brief trailer (above) begins with a voiceover promising a focused season “in a world consumed by breaking news,” but before the narrator can even finish his first sentence Oliver interrupts him to read off a bunch of crazy headlines blowing up his phone.

“ISIS won Powerball?” Oliver asks incredulously. “Who sold them a ticket?”

The 2014 Stern Show guest, Emmy-winning talk show host, and live-action “Lion King” cast member in fact breezes through a string of satirical headlines, including ones about an anti-Semitic chipmunk, opioid-addicted kittens, the return of Harambe, and a Twitter spat involving Grammy-nominated musician and Stern Show regular Jewel.

This isn’t the first time Stern Show listeners have witnessed Oliver cover a wide range of topics, of course. In 2014, he and Howard discussed a variety of fascinating subjects during his Stern Show debut, including John’s upbringing, his early days doing stand-up in British pubs, how Ricky Gervais helped him land a job as a correspondent on Jon Stewart’s “Daily Show,” and why he ultimately took his talents to HBO. “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” returns for Season 5 on Sunday, Feb. 18 on HBO. Watch the official trailer (above).
