AUDIO: ELVIS COSTELLO TURNS JOHNNY CASH’S POEM ‘I’LL STILL LOVE YOU’ INTO A BALLAD

COVER OF COUNTRY LEGEND’S POEM TO APPEAR ON COMPILATION ‘JOHNNY CASH: FOREVER WORDS’

March 20, 2018

Elvis Costello has morphed Johnny Cash’s poem “I’ll Still Love You” into a ballad adorned with strings for the upcoming compilation “Johnny Cash: Forever Words,” featuring various artists performing songs based on poetry written by the country legend.

Produced by Johnny and June Carter’s son Carter Cash, the album also features Kacey Musgraves, Willie Nelson, Brad Paisley, Jewel, and John Mellencamp. The previously released “You Never Knew My Mind,” by the late Chris Cornell, is also on the compilation.

Along with today’s song post, Elvis, who came on the Stern Show in 2015, also posted a video interview where he talks about approaching his recording in a non-Johnny-like way because he couldn’t hear Johnny’s “musical voice” when he read the poem. Watch the chat (below).

“Johnny Cash: Forever Words” is out April 6.
