VIDEO: ‘Game of Thrones’ Star Jason Momoa Gets Wet and Wild in Official ‘Aquaman’ Trailer

James Wan-directed superhero film makes a splash on Dec. 21

The origins of DC Comics’ most distinguished undersea superhero are revealed in the official trailer for “Aquaman,” which Warner Bros. finally floated over the weekend.

The standalone superhero film stars early season “Game of Thrones” standout Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, the half-human, half-Atlantian member of the Justice League whose powers include swimming fast and talking to fish. But the trailer (above) begins long before the events of last year’s “Justice League” team-up film and focuses in part on Arthur’s turbulent childhood, the development of his powers, and the ill-fated romance between his parents, a human lighthouse keeper (Temuera Morrison) and the underwater queen of Atlantis (Nicole Kidman).

Once all grown up, Aquaman spends his days foiling Russian pirates, flirting with a warrior named Mera (Amber Heard), hunting for the Trident of Neptune, and attempting to foil the plots of his power-hungry half-brother King Orm (Patrick Wilson) and the supervillain Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II).

Directed by James Wan (“Furious 7,” “The Conjuring”), the film co-stars Dolph Lundgren, Willem Dafoe, and Ludi Lin.

“Aquaman” sets sail on Dec. 21. Watch the official trailer (above).
