A telekinetic mutant gets possessed by a mysterious cosmic force in the official trailer for “Dark Phoenix,” the latest entry in the “X-Men” franchise, hitting theaters in June.

“Game of Thrones” heroine Sophie Turner stars as Jean Grey, a powerful member of the X-Men who becomes even more powerful after encountering an otherworldly radiation which nearly kills her. She soon heals but the cosmic force and a mysterious Jessica Chastain character threaten to send her down a dangerous path toward becoming the villain Dark Phoenix.

“You’re special, Jean,” Chastain’s character tells her in the trailer. “And if you stop fighting that force inside you, if you embrace it, you will possess the very power of a god.”

The clip shows Jean eventually succumbing to her inner demons and turning against her fellow X-Men, beginning with a violent and potentially deadly encounter with Oscar-winning actress and 2018 Stern Show guest Jennifer Lawrence’s shapeshifting character Mystique. It’s unclear whether Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Professor X (James McAvoy), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), and the rest of the X-Men will be able to stop slow Dark Phoenix down, but the fate of the world may well depend on their trying.

“Dark Phoenix” opens June 7 in theaters.
