Mr. Miyagi actor Pat Morita may have died in 2005, but his legacy lives on in the Season 2 teaser for “Cobra Kai,” YouTube's action and comedy-filled follow-up series to “The Karate Kid.”
Set to a cover of Bananarama’s “Cruel Summer”—which itself was used in the franchise's first film—the teaser for the new batch of episodes foretells a new chapter in the rivalry between karate champions turned instructors Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). Los Angeles apparently isn’t big enough for two elite dojos, so Daniel’s Miyagi-Do—named after his legendary sensei Mr. Miyagi—must compete with Johnny’s Cobra Kai for the hearts and minds of the San Fernando Valley's aspiring martial arts students.
Each dojo’s philosophy is as different as the sensei who leads it, however. “Cobra Kai is about being badass,” Johnny tells his students at one point in the trailer (above).
“Remember, it doesn’t matter who anyone was before they stepped into this dojo. All that matters is that we are all Miyagi-Do,” Daniel counters.
“Cobra Kai” co-stars Tanner Buchanan, Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, and Martin Kove (who reprises his film role as Johnny's take-no-prisoners mentor John Kreese). As Stern Show fans will remember, Season 1 of the series made resident TV expert Jon Hein’s list of best shows from 2018. The series also became a point of contention between Howard and Stern Show staffer Gary Dell’Abate after Howard learned his executive producer had screened an advanced copy of the show without telling him. Relive the hilarious moment from 2018 (below).
