Tom Cruise is back as renowned Naval aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the high-flying Super Bowl trailer for “Top Gun: Maverick,” taking off in June.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the much anticipated sequel is set 30 years after the events of the 1986 blockbuster original. The story follows Maverick as he battles some of the ghosts of his past while trying to train a new class of Top Gun recruits, including “Rooster” (Miles Teller), the son of his late friend and co-pilot “Goose.”

“My Dad believed in you,” Rooster tells him in the new spot (above). “I’m not going to make the same mistake.”

Though it doesn’t show Cruise’s character dog fighting with any bogeys, the 30-second teaser does see Maverick flying dangerously close to some mountains and getting rowdy in ready rooms while trying not to succumb to the negative voices in his own head.

“Top Gun: Maverick” co-stars Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Val Kilmer, and Glen Powell, among others. The film is produced by Cruise, David Ellison, and Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the original.

“Top Gun: Maverick” premieres June 26.
