B.J. Novak and Ashton Kutcher Satirize True Crime Podcasts in ‘Vengeance’ Trailer

Issa Rae, Dove Cameron, and Boyd Holbrook co-star in the Texas-set dark comedy

May 24, 2022

A true crime podcaster travels from New York City to West Texas to investigate the death of a girl he’d been hooking up with in the trailer for the dark comedy “Vengeance,” arriving in July.

B.J. Novak (“The Office”), who wrote and directed the film, stars as Ben Manalowitz, the aforementioned podcaster who heads to the Lonestar State for a funeral and gets more than he bargained for when his dead lover’s family attempts to convince him she was murdered. Ben and his podcasting partner (Issa Rae) are skeptical at first, but between an exploding Prius and a wacky cast of townsfolk that includes Ashton Kutcher, Dove Cameron, and Boyd Holbrook, it doesn’t take Ben long to realize something strange is happening in Texas.

Produced by Jason Blum, “Vengeance” serves as Novak’s directorial debut. For Kutcher, meanwhile, it’s the “Jobs” star’s first feature film role since his 2017 visit to the Stern Show for a conversation with Howard that touched upon everything from his high-profile relationships to his high-tech investment portfolio. Check out a clip from their sit-down (below).

“Vengeance” will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival before opening in theaters on July 29.
