Ed Sheeran Survives a Shipwreck in Somber New ‘Boat’ Music Video

Song appears on the 32-year-old superstar’s May album “Subtract”

April 21, 2023

Grammy-winning superstar and repeat Stern Show guest Ed Sheeran is literally but not figuratively washed up in the music video for “Boat.”

Directed by Mia Barnes (“Eyes Closed”), the clip sees Sheeran standing in shallow ocean water after having presumably survived a shipwreck. The 32-year-old musician sings somberly about his unbreakable boat as frothy waves consume him and debris — including pieces of vinyl — fall from the sky.

“Boat” is the opening track off “Subtract,” Ed’s fifth studio album and first since 2021’s “=.” He’s reportedly described the song as “a metaphor for depression; a track that combats the struggles of feeling very low and not knowing how to break the cycle.”

When Sheeran last sat down with Howard in 2021, he spoke to listeners about a range of topics, including the inspiration behind some of his most acclaimed songs and what it’s been like to work with greats like Sir Elton John. He opened up about his love for ketchup, too. Check out a clip from the conversation (below) and catch the full interview here.

Ed Sheeran’s “-” arrives May 5.
