Howard Did Letterman

Early in the show, Howard looked back at his Letterman appearance last Thursday, fuming that producers said he was booked for two segments–and one more, if things went well: “In other words, ‘Maybe you’ll get a third.’ I wish they wouldn’t say that to me. I really don’t feel like I have to [prove myself]. What is this? A test of whether or not I’m good? They have me booked as a guest. Is this a contest to get Dave’s approval?” Howard’s own policy is far more courteous (“On our show, I never say that.”), allowing the conversation to flow naturally. When a good interview is over, it’s not resurrected unnecessarily: “It’s like riding a bull.”
