The end of the 1980s wasn't easy for Suzanne 'Underdog' Muldowney. While the rest of the world was flocking to theaters to see the movie "Batman," she told Stern Show staffer Shuli Egar how the release of the blockbuster film actually spoiled the 25th anniversary of her favorite cartoon hero, Underdog.
"It was very painful for me in 1989 because that was also Underdog's silver anniversary," Underdog told Shuli. "There was no orgy of media hype billed around him the way it was billed around 'Batman' that year."
The movie also affected her parade appearances. Even though she would show up to events in full costume, she was no match for the caped crusader craze. "Every time I was about to make an Underdog appearance in 1989 I had to alert people that it was the 25th anniversary because the movie Michael Keaton starred in was promoted and publicized for months before it was finally finished," Underdog explained.
"Wouldn't it be fair to say that everything that year overshadowed Underdog?" Howard wondered.
While Suzanne still has an axe to grind with Batman, it seems she's warming up to Howard again. For the first time in ages, she had nothing negative to say about him while talking on the phone with Shuli.
"Howard and his wife Beth, they rescue cats and they help find homes for them," Shuli told Underdog.
"Oh, that's nice," she replied.
Howard hoped that this is the first step in getting her back on the Stern Show. "You might see her here one day," he said.
