Stern Show staffer and TV aficionado Jon Hein reviews the 71st Emmy Awards

September 23, 2019

Good Morning Everybody!

Jon Hein was at home watching the 71st Primetime Emmys on Sunday night and he wasn’t happy with what he saw. The Stern Show staffer told Howard on Monday morning there were several things throughout the award ceremony that upset him, including that “Game of Thrones” didn’t win for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series in its final season.

“I’m stunned. I really am,” Jon said, arguing all three of the “Game of Thrones” episodes nominated in that category were like movies they were so good. “Ozark” star Jason Bateman won the directing award last night for the work he did behind the camera on the episode “Reparations.”

Jon also complained about Peter Dinklage being the only “Game of Thrones” cast member to win an Emmy despite several of the show’s main players being nominated. He was texting his disappointment to his co-worker JD Harmeyer throughout the night.

“Winners he disagreed with he would keep texting me, ‘Get off the stage, I’m tired of hearing from you,'” JD told Howard with a laugh.

Even the ceremony’s in memoriam got Jon angry, saying the Emmy cameras showed too much of the performance from Halsey and not enough of the celebrities who passed away this year.

Howard suspected there was an additional factor for why Jon Hein was so fired up last night – this weekend his beloved University of Michigan lost their football game against rival Wisconsin as did Jon’s pro team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, against the 49ers.

“That had a lot to do with it,” Jon admitted. “It was a shitty weekend.”
