LinkNYC Cuts Internet Browsing at Kiosks to Avoid Public Porn

New Yorkers have been using the free tablets very, very inappropriately

This is why we can’t have nice things.

If you live in New York City, you’ve no doubt seen LinkNYC tablet kiosks, a “first -of-its kind communications network that will replace over 7,500 payphones across five boroughs.” The completely free WiFi service is intended to allow users to easily access city services, maps and directions.

Naturally, New Yorkers have been using them to look at porn.

After only 400 LinkNYC internet kiosks were installed, the company received numerous complaints of users turning them into personal living rooms: pulling up chairs, watching full films, and, yes, viewing oodles of pornography. Some users resorted to publicly masturbating at the kiosks. As a result, LinkNYC plans to disable all web browsing on the kiosks this week.

“The kiosks were never intended for anyone’s extended, personal use and we want to ensure that Links are accessible and a welcome addition to New York City neighborhoods,” the company said in a statement.

Users will still be able to use the LinkNYC tablets to make phone calls, check maps, access 311 and 911, and charge their phones. That is, until someone finds a way to masturbate to those things.
