Porn shot in California is about to potentially see the rise of a hot new star: latex.

In November, a vote will take place on Proposition 60, which would require pornography producers to enforce condom use in the state. “If these producers cared about our health and safety, this is a no-brainer,” said Derrick Burts, a supporter and former adult film star who contracted H.I.V.

However, many in the porn industry see the initiative as hugely problematic, and worry it is written in a way that would result in potentially disastrous litigation. For instance, under the proposition, any party would be able to sue producers if the workplace safety agency failed to act on a reported violation. Additionally, such litigation would force porn stars (who often double as producers) to release their real names and addresses, which could be potentially disastrous for all involved.

The adult film industry also worries that condom use has hurt sales, claiming that their frequent testing for sexually transmitted diseases has been effective in protecting the health of their stars.
