The hotly contested role of Cable has finally been cast.

Oscar-winner Josh Brolin has signed on to star opposite Ryan Reynolds in “Deadpool 2,” the follow-up to Fox’s surprise 2016 blockbuster about a foul-mouthed mercenary, according to multiple reports.

Reynolds revealed Cable’s eventual emergence in the superhero franchise during a post-credit scene in “Deadpool.” Since then, the rumor mill has been working overtime speculating who might play Marvel’s time-traveling mutant. Everyone from David Harbour (“Stranger Things”) to Kyle Chandler (“Bloodline”) to Michael Shannon (“Nocturnal Animals”) was allegedly in consideration. Wednesday, it was revealed that Brolin had won the role.

“Deadpool 2” isn’t the only big-name sequel in Brolin’s immediate future—he stars alongside Benicio del Toro in “Soldado,” the follow-up to “Sicario.” Nor is it his only upcoming Marvel movie, as Brolin will play the intergalactic big bad Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War,” set for May 2018.

David Leitch (“John Wick”) is directing “Deadpool 2,” which also co-stars Zazie Beetz (“Atlanta”) as Domino. No release date has been announced, but the film is set to begin production this June in Vancouver.
