“American Idol” is back from the dead just 13 months after ending its long run on Fox.

The competitive singing series, rumored for months now to be making a return, has been revived at ABC. The network broke the news Tuesday morning on “Good Morning America,” revealing the comeback would happen sometime during the 2017-18 TV season.

ABC declined to name either judges or a host for its reboot, though a report in the New York Times was quick to point out that former “American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest “joined ABC and Disney’s syndicated morning show, ‘Live,’ last week.”

“American Idol” is credited with changing the landscape of reality and competitive TV after it burst onto the scene in 2002. Ratings started to dwindle in its later years, however—especially as competitors like “The Voice” grew more popular—but “Idol” still reportedly averaged over 11 million viewers when Fox pulled the plug.

Still, the Times report has called ABC’s decision to breathe life back into the show “a head-spinning move, even by the standards of broadcast networks desperately searching for a hit.”
