A lonely, deaf janitor working in a government laboratory befriends an amphibious creature in “The Shape of Water,” a fantastical fairy tale from filmmaker Guillermo del Toro.

In the new red band trailer (above), Elisa (Sally Hawkins) gets a job cleaning floors at a secret research facility during the height of the Cold War. She and her co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) mostly keep to themselves at first, but everything changes after they stumble across a top-secret experiment—a mysterious, gilled creature living within one of the laboratory’s water tanks.

Del Toro—the acclaimed filmmaker behind “Hellboy,” “Pan’s Labyrinth,” and FX’s vampire drama “The Strain”—directed and co-wrote the film (along with “Game of Thrones” co-executive producer Vanessa Taylor), which also stars Richard Jenkins, Doug Jones, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Michael Shannon.

“The Shape of Water” premiered at the 74th Venice International Film Festival and swims its way into theaters on Dec. 8. Watch the latest red band trailer (above).
