Al Pacino is a Nittany Lion in headlights in the official trailer for “Paterno,” HBO’s upcoming drama about the aftermath of Penn State’s sexual abuse scandal and the toll it took on the life and legacy of a formerly renowned college football coach.
The film centers on Penn State football icon Joe Paterno (Pacino) as the world learns his longtime defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky has been abusing children for years while the university and possibly Paterno himself have been covering up his awful misdeeds. The newly released trailer (above) highlights both Paterno’s public and private falls from grace, as he rapidly devolves from one of the sport’s most beloved figures to a disgraced shell of a legend who finally gets fired before he can even resign.
Pacino, an Oscar-winner and eight-time nominee, stars alongside Riley Keough, Kathy Baker, Greg Grunberg, Annie Parisse, and Larry Mitchell in a film directed by Barry Levinson (“Rain Man”).
