VIDEO: John Legend’s ‘A Good Night’ Adds a Modern Twist to a Classic Love Story

Award-winning entertainer's latest effort is filmed entirely on smartphones

April 6, 2018

John Legend’s new music video for “A Good Night” takes a familiar story of love at first sight and adds a modern twist.

The clip (above) begins with a woman entering a night club searching for romance. She encounters a variety of potential suitors on the dance floor, but instead of talking with them she channels the world of dating apps and “swipes” them away after she decides she’s not interested. After a lengthy search, the woman thinks she’s finally found the one, only to have him right-swipe her away—which literally sends her flying across the room and onto the floor. As this is an upbeat, heartwarming John Legend track, however, the woman eventually finds her match and a marriage quickly ensues.

“The song and the video are about a magical night where you meet someone you immediately connect with and can envision a future together. You’re single, dating, probably using all the apps people use now … and not finding someone special,” John explained in an interview with Google, whose Pixel 2 smartphones are what director Mishka Kornai used to film the music video.

“A Good Night,” featuring BloodPop, is John’s first single since last year’s “In America,” which appeared on the TV series “Underground.” However, the Oscar, Grammy, and Tony-winning Stern Show veteran has remained busy since then, starring most recently on NBC’s live Easter production of “Jesus Christ Superstar.” Check out a clip from John Legend’s 2013 sit-down with Howard (below) and watch his new music video for “A Good Night” (above).
