Clive Owen plays a detective hunting a ghost-like serial killer in “Anon,” an upcoming sci-fi thriller set in a dystopian future where technological advancements have nearly eradicated both crime and privacy.

While combing through everyone’s personal information looking for clues, Clive stumbles across The Girl (Amanda Seyfried), a mysterious hacker with no digital footprint. She might be the key to solving his case, but his bosses seem more concerned with whether her off-the-grid existence poses a threat to their surveillance-centered society.

“Anonymity is the enemy,” one character tells Clive in the trailer (above). “We gotta find out how she does it. You’re going undercover.”

Directed by veteran high-concept filmmaker Andrew Niccol (“Gattaca, “In Time”), “Anon” premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival where Netflix reportedly acquired its U.S. distribution rights as part of a $4 million deal. It’s unclear when the streaming giant will release the film stateside, but the film’s European distributor released a trailer this week ahead of its May 11 U.K. debut.
